Unit 62 — Verb + preposition + -ing

succeed in -ing / insist on -ing etc.


A. Verb + preposition + object

有些动词后面会接:

verb + preposition + object

例如:

VerbPrepositionObject

I apologisedforwhat I said.

1. 如果 object 是一个动词,要使用 -ing

如果介词后面的宾语是一个动作,那么动词使用:

-ing

结构:

verb + preposition + -ing

例如:

We talkedaboutgoing to South America.
You should apologisefornot telling the truth.

2. talk about doing

We talked about going to South America.

我们谈到了去南美洲的事情。

结构:

talk about + -ing


3. apologise for doing

You should apologise for not telling the truth.

你应该为没有说实话而道歉。

结构:

apologise for + -ing

否定:

apologise for not + -ing


4. 常见 Verb + Preposition + -ing

下面这些动词可以使用同样的结构:

  • approve of
  • decide against
  • dream of
  • feel like
  • insist on
  • look forward to
  • succeed in
  • think of/about

5. approve of doing

He doesn’t approve of swearing.

他不赞成说脏话。

结构:

approve of + -ing


6. decide against doing

We have decided against moving to London.

我们决定不搬去伦敦。

结构:

decide against + -ing

这里:

decide against doing

表示:

决定不做某事。


7. dream of doing

I wouldn’t dream of asking them for money.

我绝不会想向他们要钱。

结构:

dream of + -ing


8. feel like doing

I don’t feel like going out tonight.

我今晚不想出去。

结构:

feel like + -ing

例如:

I feel like having some coffee.

我想喝点咖啡。


9. insist on doing

They insisted on paying for the meal.

他们坚持要付这顿饭的钱。

结构:

insist on + -ing


10. look forward to doing

Are you looking forward to going away?

你期待出去玩吗?

结构:

look forward to + -ing

注意:

这里的 to 是介词。

所以:

✅ look forward to going

不是:

❌ look forward to go


11. succeed in doing

Has Paul succeeded in finding a job yet?

Paul 已经成功找到工作了吗?

结构:

succeed in + -ing

表示:

成功做成某事。


12. think of/about doing

I’m thinking of/about buying a house.

我正在考虑买房。

结构:

think of/about + -ing

14. Preposition + somebody + doing

还可以使用:

preposition + somebody + -ing

例如:

I don’t approve of people killing animals as a sport.

我不赞成人们把杀动物当作运动。

结构:

approve of + somebody + doing


We are all looking forward to Andy coming home next week.

我们都期待 Andy 下周回家。

结构:

look forward to + somebody + doing

这里:

  • Andy = 动作执行者
  • coming = 动作

15. somebody doing

可以理解为:

“某人做某事”这件事情

例如:

I don’t like people telling me what to do.

我不喜欢别人告诉我该怎么做。

同样:

I don’t approve of people killing animals.


B. Verb + object + preposition + -ing

有些动词的结构是:

verb + object + preposition + -ing

例如:

accuse somebody of doing

结构:

17. accuse somebody of doing

He accused me of telling lies.

他指责我说谎。

18. congratulate somebody on doing

We congratulated Lisa on winning the first prize.

我们祝贺 Lisa 获得一等奖。

结构:

congratulate + somebody + on + -ing


19. prevent somebody from doing

What prevented you from coming to see us?

是什么阻止你来看我们?

结构:

prevent + somebody + from + -ing


20. stop somebody from doing

The rain didn’t stop us from enjoying our holiday.

雨并没有妨碍我们享受假期。

结构:

stop + somebody + from + -ing


21. suspect somebody of doing

Nobody suspected the general of being a spy.

没有人怀疑那位将军是间谍。

结构:

suspect + somebody + of + -ing


22. thank somebody for doing

I thanked everyone for helping me.

我感谢每个人帮助我。

结构:

thank + somebody + for + -ing

25. stop somebody doing / stop somebody from doing

stop 有两种常见表达:

stop somebody doing

或者:

stop somebody from doing

例如:

You can’t stop me doing what I want.

或者:

You can’t stop me from doing what I want.

两种都可以。


26. stop ... from ...

结构:

stop + somebody + from + -ing

例如:

Nothing can stop me from learning English.

没有什么能阻止我学习英语。


27. not -ing

否定形式是:

not + -ing

例如:

He accused me of not telling the truth.

他指责我没有说实话。

结构:

accuse somebody of not doing


28. 更多 not -ing 例子

Thank you for not telling anyone.

谢谢你没有告诉任何人。

She apologised for not coming.

她为没有来而道歉。

I’m worried about not finishing on time.

我担心不能按时完成。


29. 被动结构

这些动词有些经常用于被动语态。

例如:

We were accused of telling lies.

我们被指责说谎。

或者:

We were accused of lying.

我们被指责撒谎。

结构:

be accused of + -ing


30. was suspected of being

The general was suspected of being a spy.

那位将军被怀疑是间谍。

结构:

be suspected of + -ing


31. 主动和被动对比

所以完整结构:

apologise to somebody for doing something


33. apologise to them for keeping ...

I apologised to them for keeping them waiting.

我因为让他们久等而向他们道歉。

结构拆解:

apologise ↓ to themfor keeping them waiting

不是:

❌ I apologised them.

因为:

apologise 不能直接接人。


34. apologise vs thank

注意结构不同:

apologise

apologise to somebody for doing

例如:

I apologised to Sarah for being late.


thank

thank somebody for doing

例如:

I thanked Sarah for helping me.

42. succeed in vs manage to

这两个都可以表示:

成功做成某事。

但结构不同。

succeed

succeed in + -ing

例如:

I succeeded in fixing the problem.


manage

manage to + V1

例如:

I managed to fix the problem.

所以:

这是非常实用的口语结构:

feel like doing

意思:

想做某事 / 有做某事的兴致。

例如:

Do you feel like going out?

你想出去吗?

I feel like having a coffee.

我想喝杯咖啡。

否定:

I don’t feel like working today.

我今天不想工作。


45. think about doing

表示:

考虑做某事。

例如:

I’m thinking about changing my job.

我正在考虑换工作。


46. decide against doing

可以理解为:

最终决定不做

例如:

We decided against buying the house.

我们决定不买那套房子。

它和:

We decided not to buy the house.

意思接近。

但结构不同:

decide against doing

vs

decide not to do


47. look forward to somebody doing

不一定只能:

look forward to doing

也可以:

look forward to somebody doing

例如:

I’m looking forward to you coming to Shanghai.

我期待你来上海。


48. approve of somebody doing

同理:

I don’t approve of him driving so fast.

我不赞成他开这么快。

结构:

approve of + somebody + -ing
